Written by Calypso Carol The least popular female activist in Afghanistan isn't an Afghan native, but a Canadian writer and counselor called Deborah Ellis, whose short novel, is an illuminating and sometimes harrowing account of the heinous way that young women in Afghanistan are treated and a revealing look at the murderous regime that was the Taliban. This novel is not entirely a work of fiction; when Ellis traveled to Afghanistan to see for herself how poorly women were being treated, she met a young girl who disguised herself as a boy in order to support her family. Intrigued, Ellis wrote her story.
Parvana is an eleven year old girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to earn money for her family whilst her father is imprisoned by the Taliban. Whilst it is Parvana's story that is told, the book is also about the horror of living under the Taliban, whose treatment of anyone who disagreed with them was horrific, but whose treatment of women was infinitely more cruel. Everything that Parvana cares about is taken away; her father is taken by the Taliban. Her freedoms are not just eroded, they are removed completely. Afghan women were not allowed to get an education, educated by underground schools run by other courageous women just like them. In order to make sure that her writing genuinely represented the lives of the children like, Ellils interviewed many Afghan children who were living as refugees.
She also donates a percentage of the sales of each of her books to refugee organizations. The Breadwinner was extraordinarily well received and along with three subsequent books about Pervana was awarded the Peter Pan Prize for children's literature, and the Middle East Book Award. It was also adapted for the big screen in 2008.
